On Thursday, 28 August, Israel carried out an air strike on Sanaa, the capital of Yemen. The attack killed the Prime Minister of Yemen and several ministers. This is in line with Israel’s decades-long practice of liquidating the leadership of its opponents, thereby depriving any resistance to the Israeli imperialists of its leadership. This escalation is part of a broader strategy of imperialist domination in the region and proves that this system respects no rules, only the logic of maximum profit. The NCPN condemns this barbaric act by Israel and expresses its solidarity with the Yemeni people.
It is no coincidence that the Israeli bourgeoisie is attacking Yemen. Yemen is strategically located at the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, an important passageway for world trade and energy flows. The US-EU-NATO, Israel and other powers are all trying to control this region, each in defence of their own capitalist interests: either to maintain their dominance or to expand into new markets and spheres of influence. In all cases, it is the population that pays the price.
The material consequences of these interventions are devastating: entire neighbourhoods are bombed to rubble; families are torn apart; infrastructure, hospitals and schools are destroyed; millions of people are forced into displacement and exile.
Meanwhile, our own bourgeoisie is complicit in Israel’s crimes: political, economic and military support for Israel flows directly from its interests. Arms exports, oil routes and financial speculation abroad bring our capitalists a lot of money, while at the same time bourgeois governments impose austerity measures and deteriorating living conditions on the population in the Netherlands. Housing, healthcare and education are being sacrificed to secure their profits.
We declare our solidarity with the people of Yemen, caught between imperialist fires. Their struggle is our struggle. Against the logic of profit, we oppose the unity of workers across all borders. The answer to imperialist war is not to choose one imperialist bloc over another, but the independent organisation of the international working class and its allies against capitalism.
We call on the Dutch people to resist and expose the complicity of our governments. Only the collective power of the people can end the spiral of destruction and open the way to genuine peace, justice and socialism.
